2026 Black Friday Korea Import Guide — Complete FX, Customs & Shipping Reference
US store prices drop 40–70% on Black Friday, but the actual KRW amount charged to your card is discounted price + international shipping + customs duty + 10% VAT + card FX fee — all combined. This guide uses the 2026-04-19 customs rate schedule, carrier fees, and card fee disclosures to show you the real landed cost.
This guide is based on the 2026-04-19 published customs duty rates, 10.00% VAT, carrier rates, and card issuer fees. Actual clearance and billing amounts depend on Korea Customs Unipass and card clearing timing. Unofficial tool.
1. The Total-Cost Formula
- Discounted item price (USD) = list price × (1 − discount%) − coupon
- Taxable value = item price + international shipping (simplified insurance excluded)
- Customs duty = taxable value × duty rate (by category). If the item qualifies for simplified clearance and taxable value ≤ $150, all duty and VAT are waived.
- VAT = (taxable value + customs duty) × 10%
- Card FX fee = (item price + shipping + tax) × (brand fee 1.0% + issuer markup 0.18–0.25%). TravelWallet/TravelLog prepaid cards: 0%.
- Final KRW = total USD × mid-market rate (or card clearing rate)
2. The $150 Simplified Clearance Threshold — Black Friday's Lifeline
Korea Customs' simplified clearance (목록통관) scheme waives both customs duty and VAT for personal-use items with a taxable value of $150 or less. Exceeding this by even $1 converts the entire shipment to full formal taxation. Rule #1 for Black Friday imports: keep taxable value = item price + international shipping at or below $150. Adjusting the item price is far more impactful than trimming shipping costs.
Exception: health supplements and vitamins require formal customs clearance regardless of value — duty and VAT apply even below $150, and there is a personal-use allowance limit (6 bottles or $150 equivalent).
3. Customs Duty Rate Table (US-origin shipments)

4. Five Carrier Options — Rates & Transit Times
| Carrier | Base fee | Per lb | Fuel surcharge | Transit | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 📮USPS (US Postal Service) | $18 | $6 | 0.00% | 7–14 days | Cheapest international post. Best for small/low-value. Weak tracking. |
| 📦DHL Express | $45 | $9 | 19.00% | 3–5 days | Fastest express. +19% fuel surcharge. Best for high-value/urgent. |
| ✈️FedEx International | $42 | $8.5 | 17.00% | 3–6 days | Slightly cheaper than DHL. +17% fuel surcharge. BF season delays common. |
| 🏢Korean Forwarding (Malltail / Shipto avg.) | $12 | $5.5 | 0.00% | 10–18 days | Via Oregon tax-free state. Lowest per-lb when consolidating orders. |
| 🛒Amazon Global Shipping | $15 | $4 | 0.00% | 5–10 days | Free over $25 with Prime. Includes prepaid duties/tax option. |
Billable weight is the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight. Dimensional weight (lb) = volume (cu.in) ÷ carrier divisor (DHL/FedEx: 139; USPS/forwarding: 166). Bulky low-density items (pillows, duvets) are often much more expensive than their actual weight suggests.
5. Eight Store Presets — Average Shipping Estimates

- Belk — avg. shipping $42 · No direct Korea shipping — use forwarder. 60–70% BF apparel sales.

- eBay — avg. shipping $20 · GSP prepays duties. Seller-specific rates vary widely.

- Nike US — avg. shipping $30 · 1–2 wk delivery. Shoes 13% duty. Keep under $150.
- Sephora US — avg. shipping $25 · Cosmetics 6.5% duty. Duty-free under $150. BF bundle deals.
- Ralph Lauren — avg. shipping $38 · Apparel 13% duty. 40–50% BF discounts often push over $150.
6. Card FX Fee Selection
TravelWallet (Visa) / Hana TravelLog (Mastercard) / Woori WON+ prepaid travel cards charge a combined 0% brand fee + markup — you pay exactly the mid-market rate. Regular Visa/Master credit cards add brand fee 1.0% + issuer markup 0.18–0.25% ≈ 1.25% effective, meaning about $2.50 extra on a $200 purchase. Preloading USD before Black Friday season is the cheapest option.
7. Never Accept DCC (Pay in KRW)
If a checkout page asks "Pay in KRW?", always choose USD (local currency). Accepting KRW lets the merchant add a 5–8% margin on top of the card fee — pushing the effective rate to 8–9% and wiping out nearly half of a 40% Black Friday discount.
8. Category-Specific $150 Strategy
- Electronics, laptops, toys, books (0% duty): Exceeding $150 only triggers 10% VAT — a modest impact. High-value electronics in the $200–300 range can still be good value.
- Clothing, shoes, bags (13% duty): Exceeding $150 triggers ~24% effective rate (duty + VAT), wiping out more than half of a 40% discount. Split orders to keep each shipment under $150.
- Cosmetics (6.5% duty): Stay under $150 to maintain the duty-free benefit. Split bundle sets into individual items across orders.
- Supplements/nutraceuticals: Full taxation regardless of amount + quantity limits (6 bottles/$150). The customs cost often exceeds the discount — compare against domestic Coupang/Oliveyoung prices first.
